Mann Scholars
The Mann Endowment has been established at the Madison Community Foundation. Each year the income from the endowment will be used to provide support for Mann Scholars. Scholars are nominated by their teachers and counselors and selected in eighth grade. The Mann Scholars will contract with their schools to participate in academic enrichment activities, designed to enhance their academic performance.Enhancement of academic performance may be achieved, for example, by:
-
Participating in a summer enrichment program.
-
Seeking tutorial assistance.
-
Purchasing computer hardware and/or educational software.
Goal
The primary goal of the Mann Endowment is to help children become responsible, creative, ambitious, contributing citizens of society. Targeted skills for development include:
- Verbal and written communications,
- Computer literacy,
- Quantitative reasoning, and
- Critical thinking.
Selection Process
Mann Scholars — primarily, but not exclusively, children of color — will be selected on the basis of financial need, academic promise, motivation, and the willingness of their families to encourage participation in enrichment activities. These scholars will be children who, without your help, could face major challenges in achieving success. The Madison Metropolitan School District, with the approval of the Board of the Mann Endowment, will select scholars, design the learning contracts, and coordinate tutors and mentors.
